Step-by-step guide to freedom

BEFORE YOU DELETE

Download your data first. Once deleted, it's gone forever. Grace period: 30 days.

Download Your Data

Open Instagram Settings

Open the Instagram app → Go to your Profile → Tap the menu (☰) → Settings and Privacy

Request Your Data

Go to Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information

3.
Select Format

Choose HTML (easier to read) or JSON (for archives). Select date range and media quality.

4.
Wait for Email

Instagram will email you when your download is ready. This can take up to 48 hours.

Delete Your Account

1.
Go to Deletion Page

Visit instagram.com/accounts/remove/request/permanent/ in a browser

Log In

Log in to the account you want to delete if prompted.

3.
Select Reason

Choose why you're leaving (optional but satisfying to tell them).

4.
Confirm Deletion

Re-enter your password and click 'Delete [username]'.

This starts a 30-day countdown. Any login cancels deletion.

After You Delete

  • Delete the app from your phone IMMEDIATELY
  • Remove saved passwords from your browser
  • Unsubscribe from all Instagram emails
  • Block instagram.com in your browser if needed
